Brambles – a Bumper Crop

Brambles – a Bumper Crop

David happened to be running past our favourite bramble-picking location a few days ago (no, I can’t tell you where that is), and lo and behold, they’ve already started – nearly a month earlier than usual.  Not only that, the weather conditions we’ve had are producing a bumper crop:  the berries are bigger and sweeter than usual.  We picked 3.5 kg today (nearly 8 pounds).  I’d better get the jam pot out and start cooking!

P.S.  I forgot to take proper footwear along and was picking in my Flipflops – I can confirm that the nettles and thistles are also having a bumper year.  I won’t do that again.

GDPR / Privacy Policy

GDPR / Privacy Policy

This is to advise that we do not, and never have, kept a data base of guests who stay with us.  We do not use guests’ e-mail addresses for any sort of marketing, nor do we ever pass them on to third parties.  If you have made a booking with us, your e-mails will stay in our system for about a year (sometimes as long as 18 months) before they are deleted.

The phone number(s) provided to us by guests in conjunction with a booking are hand-written in our big booking book, and we keep the books from past years locked away.  Likewise, the registration slip filled out by guests when they check in, which include an address, telephone number, and e-mail address, are kept in a locked location and then destroyed.  The Inland Revenue requires us to keep such records for 8 years.

We hope that covers it.  We will be happy to answer any questions.

Wifi Upgrade

Wifi Upgrade

No photo with this one, just wanted you to know that we’ve done it – we got the experts to give our house WiFi system the boost it needed to function well in each of the guest rooms as well as the Garden Cottage (the other two cottages have their own separate broadband connection).

In case you’re interested in the technicalities: previously we had wireless boosters plugged in around the main house which were not working very well; we had a separate broadband in the Garden Cottage resulting in double the monthly line rental. So we engaged a Wetherby company called Sports Telecomm who have installed a point to point wireless link directly from our router in the main house to the cottage; they also installed a Ubiquiti WiFi access point in the cottage. They installed a further Ubiquiti access point on the top floor of the main house. Both access points are now either wirelessly or by Cat5 cable connected directly to our main router; the WiFi connection in each of the guest rooms was checked and found to be working well. This has allowed us to cancel the cottage broadband and have one stable network throughout.

Next time you visit us you can check it out for yourself.

Winter Wonderland… in March

Winter Wonderland… in March

four gables snow

four gables snow

Look what we woke up to. A very photogenic scene first thing this morning, but the air is fairly warm (relatively speaking), and it’s already melting like crazy (at 10.30am). Roads are slushy but in process of getting cleared – should be fine in a few hours, particularly if snow continues to melt at this rate.

Hollywood Comes to Boston Spa

Hollywood Comes to Boston Spa

Boston Spa is set to be a key location in a new movie called Official Secrets. Reportedly it’s a period drama starring Keira Knightly and Matt Smith, set about 20 years ago (are they trying to make us feel old? Twenty years ago makes it a period drama?) – and that is about all we know about it. Filming is currently due to start 13th – 17th March. Maybe we’ll all be famous.

Connie is 100 Years Old

Connie is 100 Years Old

Our neighbour Connie, now in a home, is celebrating her 100th birthday today.  She is an amazing person, with a ready smile and positive outlook – an inspiration and a shining example.  She used to hobble to the door, using a broom for a walking stick, and no matter how poorly she might be feeling, the answer to “How are you doing today?” was invariably, “Oh, not so bad!”  Here she is with her card from the Queen.  Happy birthday, Connie.

Crabapple Tree with Roses

Crab Apple Tree with Roses

The roses are coming into their own.  The crab apple tree is losing out to this white climbing rose, which has just about conquered it.  We’ll miss the pickled crab apples, but we think it’s a fair trade-off.  Note the new gate to the right of the tree – made for us by a wonderful blacksmith.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

The other morning it was too icy and foggy to cycle, so we went for a long walk along the river instead. The sun was just breaking through and melting the hoar frost on trees and grasses; it was lovely. And Poppy was very happy to be walking with us.

So we close the year with our wish to all of our guests – past and future and potential – for a very happy and healthy New Year. Best not to comment on the year past, let alone what may await us in the coming one – but let’s just hope it’s a good one.

We look forward to welcoming you in the coming year.

With best wishes,

David and anne

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Here it is again, my annual Christmas cake production. I keep thinking I’ll cut down the list of recipients, but so far I haven’t managed it (at all). As we were away most of November, I was quite pushed for time, so I wasn’t able to decorate them all individually – had to do it assembly-line style. But the fact is, I was glad to get them done in time. If you’re staying in one of our cottages over Christmas, you’ll find one waiting for you.
